Did you know that the word “umbrella” is from Latin, root word “umbra”, which means shade or shadow? Around the sixteenth century, the western world began to popularize the use of rain umbrellas because of the rainy climate in northern Europe. Initially, rain umbrellas were only used by women. However, a famous Persian writer and traveler, Jonas Hanway, was seen publically carrying and using his trusty umbrella in England for thirty years. His influence with his fellow men helped bring into vogue the use of mens umbrellas, and in fact, English gentlemen referred to their umbrellas as a “Hanway.”

Samuel Fox, in 1852, claimed to have invented the steel ribbed umbrella design out of necessity in order to use up overstock of farthingale steel stays used for women’s corsets. Today some of the sturdiest umbrellas are made with titanium ribs to protect the canopy against wind gusts and allow the umbrella to keep its shape for many years to come. The choices of umbrellas for sale today are endless with colorful parasols, large family sized umbrellas, classy wood handled mens umbrellas, umbrellas with automatic open and close mechanisms, fold up models able to fit in a pocket or purse, and fancy, laced trimmed umbrellas for women with a sophisticated sense of fashion.
