Rain Umbrellas
Historians believe that the prototype of what we call an umbrella was invented over four thousand years ago as evidenced by ancient art and relics found in Egypt, Greece, Assyria, and even China. These ancient cultures first produced a type of parasol umbrella for protection from the hot sun of Northern Africa and the Mediterranean region. The Chinese may have been the first civilization to wax and lacquer paper parasols to waterproof them from the rain.
Parasol to Rain Umbrellas
Living in a rainy climate, early Europeans produced rain umbrellas from wood or even whalebone and then covered them in alpaca wool or an oiled canvas. Being handcrafted, these artisans were handsomely rewarded for their efforts. European politicians began using umbrellas while making speeches to the public to protect them from rotten vegetables and other garbage being thrown at them.
Today we have a wide assortment of sun, parasol umbrellas, or rain umbrellas from which to choose. They can range from the frilly lace trim to the sturdy titanium reinforced rims, from plastic to fine wood handles, full, family sized canopies to push button automatic open and close fold up umbrellas that fit in a purse. Of course, we have a wide selection of fabric, colors and patterns too. Umbrellas have become a fashion statement accessory that gives off an air of sophistication if one chooses.
